Prevention and Capacity Building

ECAAIR Canada conducts Prevention and Capacity Building workshops in Canada, in the Democratic Republic of Congo and in Uganda with the objective to build capacity, harmonize efforts and share best practices in interventions with stakeholders. Our stakeholders are community organizations, government actors, nongovernmental actors and Faith Based Organizations and Private Foundations in regions targeted by our programs. Examples include :

  1. Prevention and Capacity building workshops in Canada

2015/2016 ECAAIR were involved and conducted 4 workshops in Canada with the objective to harmonize efforts and share best practices in interventions (targeting children mental wellbeing and human rights) with stakeholders. Workshops included:

  • the “Mental Health Round Table” organized by Hon. David Coon, Green Party MLA in partnership with ECAAIR ( around 60 people
participated representing over 20 community stakeholders including the Office of the Child and Youth Advocate for New Brunswick,
    Addictions and Mental Health – Fredericton and the Operational Stress Injury Clinic – OSI);
  • the 2015 International summer course on the rights of the child was conducted at the University of Moncton New Brunswick. It examined the
issues concerning the mental health of children and teenagers. This course brought together hundreds of stakeholders working with children
and youth from across the globe
and allowed the attendants to share experiences and best practices on delicate questions still too often
deemed taboo in several countries where mental health services regarding children and teenagers either do not exist or remain ill-suited to their
needs. ECAAIR youth participated as presenters and course reporters; and
  • a comparative reflection and experience sharing workshop with 20 psychiatrists and 15 mental health professionals in New Brunswick
working with vulnerable communities such as refugees and victims of collective traumatic events in the D.R. Congo and in Canada with an
objective to brainstorm on the social, cultural, environmental and economic similarities and disparities that affect the victims as a mean to increase
collaboration, consultations and input for ECAAIR’s mental health programs being established in D.R. Congo.

  1. Prevention and Capacity building workshops in Uganda

  • To disseminate skills on Organizational management, Effective Human rights advocacy and reporting tools, Project Planning and Management, Monitoring and Evaluation, Planning and Fundraising for non-profit organizations.
  • To strengthen Stakeholders and ECAAIR’s presence on the ground and structures as well.

In Uganda ECAAIR works primarily with Pygmy indigenous communities and have adopted the approach of empowering them to become agents and advocates of their own change. That is being done through pygmy community based organizations (CBOs) such as OSIBA, AbaTwa of Uganda and Batwa Women self-help group.
