Peace and Human Rights Education

Since 2003, ECAAIR has joined the United Nations and all the peace makers around the globe to promote peace, harmony and human rights (as enshrined in the United Nations Universal Declarations of Human Rights) for all members of our human family through different activities such as a) the United Nations International Day of Peace Week and (b) Peace and human rights awareness raising education in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

a) United Nations International Day of Peace Week

Since 2012, ECAAIR has dedicated the week of September 21st each year with educational and awareness activities that focus on issues related to peace in the community and in schools in regions and countries where we work. This is in conjunction with the United Nations International Day of Peace.

Example: 2015/2016 year’s commemoration theme by the United Nations was “Partnership for Peace for All” which aimed to highlight the importance of all segments of society to work together to strive for peace. As part of the September 21st educational and awareness week in DRC, 2015/2016 ECAAIR has undertaken different activities in schools and in the community. Activities include:

(1) 40 presentations in 40 schools including Lugendo primary scool, the Nyamokola high school and Universite Catholique de Bukavu totaling up to 20,000 participants in the provinces of North and South Kivu;

2) 4 presentations in the community including two inBukavu, South Kivu, two in Goma, North Kivu, and one public celebration (through music, dance, poetry and public speaking) on 21st September with a participation of over 2,000 participants. In addition, over 60 community and international organizations were involved and participated in activities such as the Amani Center, the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo or MONUSCO and the provincial governments of North and South Kivu. 60 artists from across DRC also participated.

(3) A media (radio, TV and social media) outreach campaign was launched. Media outlet included the Radio Télévision nationale congolaise (RTNC), Radio France Internationale and the Catholic Radio reaching out to over 700,000 people.
